Maria Virginia Henriques-Castro, known to most as Gina, was born in Caracas, Venezuela, to Portuguese parents, José and Fernanda Henriques, who had immigrated there in search of a better life. In October 1973, she and her family moved to the United States, beginning a new chapter filled with opportunity and growth.

Gina was raised in Newark, New Jersey, where she attended St. Benedict Grammar School from Kindergarten through eighth grade. She later continued her education at Benedictine Academy in Elizabeth, New Jersey, where she completed her high school studies.

Following graduation, Gina pursued her passion for beauty and personal care at the European Academy of Cosmetology. After two years of gaining valuable experience in a beauty salon, she took a bold step at just 21 years old by opening her own business, Gina’s Hair Studio in Newark, New Jersey. Through hard work, dedication, and strong relationships with her clients, she successfully owned and operated the salon for 14 years.

Embracing a new entrepreneurial path, she closed that chapter of her life and opened More Than a Gift in April 2005. This venture reflected her creativity, business spirit, and passion for connecting with others in meaningful ways. Her journey – from the daughter of immigrants to a determined entrepreneur – demonstrates resilience, ambition, and a lifelong commitment to building a meaningful life through hard work and passion.

Gina remains deeply grateful for the unwavering support of her amazing parents, her husband Albie, and her family and friends, who have stood by her throughout her many journeys in life.
